Governor Rauner actions speak volumes. His cuts to child care, in-home care for the elderly and disabled, the Low Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and the Summer Youth Employment Program are devastating to the communities and families in the 26th district.
Investing in our public schools is the best way we can prepare the next generation of students to compete in the 21st century economy. But Illinois’ education funding system is broken. Since 2009, we’ve lost $1.4 billion in pre-kindergarten, elementary and high school education funding. We need more than just little fixes. We need to make our education funding system more fair by making sure that our local public schools are getting the same funding as wealthy suburban districts.
Christian believes that everyone deserves to feel safe in their own neighborhoods. But gun violence has gripped many of our communities. It has taken too many of our young people, it has destroyed entire neighborhoods and left many of our parents with unspeakable grief.
Christian was raised by a single mom who is now a 15-year breast cancer survivor and his grandfather who was a union steelworker. He knows first hand how difficult it is to raise a family, and how critical it is that our communities have access to good-paying jobs.
Christian understands the impact our broken justice system can have on our community. His aunt was wrongfully imprisoned for a crime she didn’t commit. She was later exonerated, but Christian’s family had to spend their life savings on lawyers’ fees to clear her name.
Christian knows the importance of policies that keep our air and water clean, hold polluters accountable for their carbon emissions, and create economic incentives to drastically reduce, or eliminate entirely, future emissions.
